On 20 October 2026, Akita Prefecture and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) signed a memorandum of understanding in Joensuu, eastern Finland. The signatories were Akita Governor Kenta Suzuki and Professor Kari Lehtinen, Dean of UEF's Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology. The signing took place at Joensuu Science Park.
The agreement runs for five years. It pairs UEF's expertise in optical measurement and imaging with Akita's strengths in robotics, AI and industry. Expected applications include agricultural automation, product quality measurement, and new measurement and manufacturing technologies.
The planned activities are joint research and development, links between researchers and companies, putting new technologies into use, knowledge sharing and joint events. Akita has said it will open its on-site environments as testing fields.
Joensuu, where UEF is based, is the main city of North Karelia, a region of about 164,000 people. On 17 November 2025, Akita signed an economic exchange memorandum with North Karelia. It supports mutual expansion of startups that use forest resources such as timber, and academic exchange between universities. The contact began at an online seminar Akita joined in February 2024. The new agreement is described as extending that economic exchange into joint work with the university.
Business Joensuu, which supports business development in Joensuu, says it will help companies and organisations from Akita find partners in North Karelia. The Finnish side also reports that tourism came up in discussions. No Japanese companies or individuals, project names or budgets have been made public so far.
